So, obviously I haven't contributed to my blog in quite some time. It's kind of embarrassing, actually. But, the last 12 months or more have been such a whirlwind of projects, spanning from logo design projects, full-on publication design, ad layouts, and websites, websites, websites. I'm going to put the following plan into official motion by putting it in writing, right here and right now: I will be redesigning my own website/brand in the next couple of months to more accurately reflect the type of work I'm capable of, as well as the type of working I'm looking to acquire in the future.
That's right- hold me to it!

Great Color Pallete ideas

It's hard to come up with creative color palettes time after time, for websites, print, whatever...
So with a simple google search, I was led to ColorLovers...Awesome! Gives you the numbers for RGB and Hex so you can input them right into any Adobe Suite program.
I'm going to be using this palette for Blithewold's brochure (It's called "The Other Side").

Frankie's going to the Tony Awards!

I've been working with Claudia Frankenberg from Frankie's Fruit and Chocolate for months now, styling her very cool brand of delicious treats. So far, I've taken the product shots, created a postcard, and we're about to launch her website. All very exciting, especially since Frankie's will be placed in the celebrity lounge gift bags at this year's Tony Awards!! Great exposure for both of us! Here's a shot from yesterday's photoshoot of what the celebrities (i.e. Nicole Kidman) will be enjoying...

Graphic design for events

I've been working with event planner Wendy Joblon for years now, helping her provide her clients with custom designed EVERYTHING for their events. Typically we're creating one-night-use logos for Weddings and Bar & Bat mitzvahs. I don't usually get to see the finished, printed work...but I've spotted the Club Zilla logo on Stoneblossom's blog!

If you haven't tried one of Kristin Brennan's cupcakes yet, you don't know what you're missing! I used to associate the word cupcake with boxed batter and canned frosting...oh, how things have changed. Kristin uses the finest ingredients and has really unusual pairings- like vanilla and lavender. Foodies: be on the look out at the Providence area farmers' markets. We're in the final stages of her logo design for the her business appropriately named "The Cupcakerie". Here's what we've come up with...

Truth be told, I've been getting a little aggrevated working from home lately. Sometimes I feel like I'm cooped up in a cell. But, this morning, I was actually thankful that I was able to take a minute away from the computer to watch the little baby dove that has been trying to escape from the top of my airconditioner. I don't think he knows how to fly yet. Glad I had my camera handy...

Chocolate's unrelenting temptation

Last week I went away on vacation to sunny Bonaire in the Netherland Antilles. You'd think that since I was in a bathing suit for seven days straight, I would've watched what I was eating. Nope! I got back to a scale that proved my week-long overindulgence. Usually, I'm pretty good at laying off the sweets, but now that I'm back to work, and editing photos from a recent product shoot for Frankie's Fruit and Chocolates, I'm feeling the call of the siren's song coming from the little silver Frankie's bag on my counter. Take a look at some of these shots and tell me if you could resist...I think not! Look for Frankie's around RI's best grocery stores. WOMA will be designing a new website shortly.

Visting New England Invitations

Today I'm here on slushy main street visiting Pamela from New England Invitations and Pamela D'Orsi Ryan Events. She's eating a really good looking spinach salad from The Grille on Main. The effect of all the December brides getting engaged and PDR events is in full effect...that means it's time to update the website!! Through a particularly interesting web surf, I stumbled upon jamcult.com and listened to this playlist. As a person who spends stupid amounts of hours at the computer, I know how important it is to have a good playlist to work by. Actually, a driving force of me starting my own company was to have complete control over the music selection played at the office. I didn't want to steal this playlist from him, but unfortunately my operating system isn't new enough to upload my own music to imeem. But check back soon (when I get my new computer) and you can hear the crazy music I listen to when I work. The below playlist is definately commendable, though!

Winter in Newport is beautiful! This is our first big snow fall, and the streets are serene. I took a walk around town with my camera, trying to capture the quirkiness of the historic district that I live in. Loved the juxtaposition of these two bright houses mixed with the starkness of the snow and sky.
How quaint!

Yes, this one has been altered a little. I felt like it could have been 1808, so I tried to give the picture that feel.
I didn't know Captains had street addresses!
Home, sweet home. Looks like I'll be getting lots of work done now that I'm snowed in. Merry Christmas everyone!!

I thought I was the only one getting distracted from my work by philosophizing about the similarities between the ever-elusive universe, and the completely overwhelming scope of the internet. Nope. Check out this blog entry by Steven York

I guess no idea is really original, and this realization also contributes to the theory. Maybe if I get my act together, I can get a book started about how I think it's all tied into the ultimate Truth of our existence. Whew!! A little too much abstract thought for my own good.

I attended a meeting of BNI Providence last Friday and had a great experience. They are a sizable group of professionals from diverse fields that get together once a week to promote themselves and each other. For a company with a focus on Word of Mouth Advertising (WOMA, duh!) this seems like my kind of marketing! I am seriously considering becoming a member. Get more info at BNI.

Digital Watercolor

I don't know if anyone knows this, but I am a huge fan of digital watercolor. I typically work in Corel Painter, but I think Illustrator may be an easier way to make work bound for commercial printing. Anyway, this website, designed by Imaginary Moments and Flash coded by More Yellow, is such a beautiful application of the digital watercolor tool. I love the splash-like technique. Well done!

Is SEO a waste?

According to today's SiteProNews newsletter, American Express kind of denounced using SEO specialists to get higher ranking on Google, Yahoo, etc. Published in an AMEX recent small business guide:

"Search engines, like Yahoo! and Google, are usually the first
place people will look for you. Make it easier for them to find
you. Yahoo! and Google offer tools to let them know the site map
structure of your Web site."

"Also, using clean U.R.L.'s like yourdomain.com/store/widgets
instead of yourdomain.com/store.php?id=42&categoryID= widgets will
increase your chances of getting indexed in a search engine."

"Finally, don't waste money on so-called Search Engine
Optimization (S.E.O.) specialists. Search engines are very quick
to penalize sites that try to trick their filtering techniques,
and once your site has been put on Google's blacklist, it will
take forever to get off."

I tend to agree with them. There are sneaky ways to fool search engines to get you higher ranked in a shorter amount of time, but the tried and true ways seem to work best in the end. There is some justice in this crazy world we call cyberspace!

Penmanship

Spawned from a recent conversation with a friend about Number 2 Pencils, I got to thinking about those old penmanship books that were used in elementary school. It's sad, and quite pathetic, to think that my handwriting was much better in first grade than it is now. I mean, it really sucks now. So much, in fact, that when attending a friends wedding, an acquaintance actually made a comment as to how suprised she was to see what my handwriting looked like in the guest book. She wasn't expecting to see such chicken scratch from someone she thought of as creative.

Is it true that kids don't practice handwriting in school anymore, or is this just a nasty rumor?

Underwater Camera Review

On a recent trip to Ambergris Cay, Belize, I finally had the chance to experiment with the underwater settings on my Olympus Stylus 770 SW. This picture of a sea turtle came out pretty good- in focus and clear. I think this was taken on the wide underwater setting. I had a hard time with the macro setting for some reason- I think it's because I couldn't keep my position long enough in the current to get the focus I wanted. I found that the Hyper Crystal LCD screen view finder comes in handy when wearing a snorkel mask, even though I'm cursing it most of the time in sunny weather. Overall, I'm giving this camera a great underwater review, although it may not be the best all-around digital.
